About

SAE Clean Snowmobile Challange
The SAE Clean Snowmobile competition is a student engineering competition where college students from across the US and Canada take a current production snowmobile and have almost free reign to modify all engine and drivetrain components. With the main goal being to minimize emissions, fuel consumption, and sound while keeping the snowmobile fast and enjoyable to drive. The competition lasts 3 days towards the end of winter. Events include handling, acceleration, endurance, noise, emissions, and cold start. Design, sales, and value benefit presentations, as well as a technical paper are also judged events that take place virtually before competition.
Badger Clean Snowmobile
The UW-Madison Badger Clean Snowmobile team was started in 2002 has 7 overall wins since then, as well numerous lowest emission and best fuel economy awards as recently as the 2023 season. While both 4-stroke and 2-stroke snowmobiles are allowed, Badger Clean Snowmobile has primary used 4-stroke snowmobiles, focused more on fuel economy, emissions, and noise, and less on ultimate performance. This years projects include improving controls to improve current catalytic converter performance, improving drive train design for less noise when driving, and testing the feasibility of a hybrid electric assist motor.
